Documenting Plants

Botanical illustrators document plant life, particularly for those who may not have an opportunity to see the live plant.  However even if you are familiar with a plant, an illustrator can make you see it in a different way.  This is the case with the work of Shevaun Doherty whose blog, Botanical Sketches is definitely worth a visit.  Her April 13 post “Exciting Times!” begins with a practice piece she did, a bunch of grapes.  This watercolor makes the viewer see grapes literally in a new light.  She then goes on to show how her color choice and technique allowed her to achieve such brilliance.  It is a wonderful example of how science and art can meet.
